Helicopter Glacier Walkabout

Discover the diversity of the southeast Alaska landscape via helicopter as you fly over temperate rainforests and granite peaks that surround Alaska's capital city. To begin your walk, your pilot will choose a landing site on one of the 36 glaciers in this 1,500-square-mile Icefield. On this relaxing, non-strenuous, one-hour interpretive walk, your guide will point out and explain the glacier features and allows ample time for photos. Trekking poles and crampons will provide superb balance and traction, enabling you to travel easily on the gently rolling glacial terrain. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age and be able to stand and walk on rolling terrain for an hour. Flight time is approximately 35 minutes, with an hour on the glacier. Floating past the Mendenhall Glacier, enjoy spectacular views of hanging glaciers, towering peaks and glacial topography. As you float down the river, you'll encounter stretches of moderate rapids as your guide explains the natural phenomena at work in this scenic valley. Note: Participants must weigh at least 40 lbs. Float duration is approximately two hours. Outerwear is provided at the site. During the float trip, there is a short portion which goes through Class Two rapids. Please note this is not a white water experience. Each raft carries eight to twelve people and is rowed by an experienced guide. Paddle to the face of the Mendenhall Glacier in a 28-foot, 12-person traditional Native canoe, similar to ones used by the Tlingit Natives. Your guide will share traditional legends and history of the Mendenhall Glacier area. The journey across the iceberg-studded lake will transport you to a world of stunning beauty in this magnificent land. Note: Participants must weigh at least 50 lbs. Your guide selects the glacier trail best suited for the group's ability and the day's hiking conditions. Experience cascading waterfalls, serene meadows and quiet forest glens. During much of the hike, the views are panoramic, encompassing expanses of glacier-carved wilderness. Note: This excursion is suited for those who love to hike, and are physically able to do so for 3 1/2 hours. Depending on the trail chosen for the day, you'll hike between four to six miles, with a possible elevation gain of 600 to 1,000 feet. Sturdy footgear is recommended. This eco-adventure combines the once-in-a lifetime thrill of flying across a series of zip lines in the rich rainforest, traversing a suspended 'sky-bridge,' crossing the channel aboard an expedition craft, ascending a mountain in a 6x6 off-road vehicle, and exploring hidden relics of a famous historical gold mine. Board a high-speed vessel crossing Gastineau Channel, passing Mayflower Island and Suicide Falls, with a beach landing at the remote Treadwell Mine on Douglas Island. From here, an off-road vehicle takes you to the forest base camp, where your guides will outfit you and provide a safety briefing, before transporting you up the densely-forested hillside to the first zip line tree platform. This is your introduction to nearly a mile of high tension cables, linking a network of platforms mounted high in carefully selected Sitka spruce trees. Cross an aerial suspension bridge, with breathtaking and spectacular views of Juneau. On the last zip line, you'll soar to base camp, and be presented with a custom-cast Alaska Canopy Adventures medal. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, weigh between 90 lbs. and 250 lbs., in good physical condition and must be comfortable with heights. Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. This tour gives you a chance to experience the beauty that surrounds Juneau at a slower pace with friendly, knowledgeable, local guides. On the van ride to the departure point, hear about Juneau's history plus interesting information on the city and its surroundings. You'll be fitted with a street bike, helmet, and water bottle and you will receive a safety briefing. The first stop is by the Chapel-by-the-Lake, a lovely old log chapel with a spectacular view of Auke Lake and the Mendenhall Glacier in the background. The ride continues to the west side of the Mendenhall Glacier, with a beach stop for a snack. Then, proceed to the visitor area at the east side of Mendenhall Glacier. This portion of the ride includes a one-mile trail ride through the rain forest. At the end of the ride, you will have a chance to spend time at Mendenhall Glacier. Next travel by van to Merchant's Wharf, an old sea plane hangar in downtown Juneau and a landmark in aviation history; there taste award winning beers from micro-breweries around Alaska.
