Juneau Hatchery & Mendenhall Glacier

Whale Watching & Wildlife Quest

Following a short drive to scenic Auke Bay, you'll board a water jet-powered catamaran specially designed for wildlife viewing. Relax in the warm and spacious main cabin with large windows, as your experienced Captain guides you through the waters of Stephen's Passage. This area is a favorite summer feeding ground for humpback whales. Once the whales have been sighted, your Captain will gently maneuver the vessel to allow exceptional viewing and photographic opportunities. Against a backdrop of snowcapped peaks, the onboard naturalist will explain the behavior and habitat of wildlife you may encounter, including sea lions, porpoises, harbor seals, bald eagles and black-tailed deer. Soaring even higher, you may pass the Mendenhall Towers - jagged rock sentinels that climb more than 7,000 feet - and the spectacular icefalls that overflow to form the Mendenhall Glacier. View icefalls, spires, and the many hanging glaciers suspended on the surrounding mountainsides before a gentle landing on this slowly moving river of ice and explore the glaciers' surface with your expert glacier guide. Upon arrival at Glacier Gardens you'll be met by your tour guide who will escort you to an exquisite atrium full of beautiful hanging baskets in full bloom. Enjoy a guided tour from covered shuttles into the rainforest. Along the way your guide will provide narrative during the mile long journey to the 580-foot level. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Mendenhall wetlands, Gastineau Channel, Douglas Island, Auke Bay, Stephen's Passage, Admiralty Island and the Chilkat Mountain Range from the viewpoint on Thunder Mountain. Juneau Sportsfishing

Troll for salmon aboard a fully equipped 28-40-foot charter boat, complete with fish finders and downriggers. All rods are firmly secured in rod holders, so you don't even have to hold them. With just four to six passengers per boat, you'll enjoy ideal conditions for fishing. For an additional charge, your catch can be flash frozen or smoked and shipped to your home (U.S. only). Note: Actual fishing duration is approximately 3 1/2 hours. We recommend participants wear rubber-soled shoes. Alaska State Law requires a fishing license which can be purchased in cash on the fishing boat for $20. During king salmon season, you must purchase an additional $10 tag. Fish cannot be stored on board the ship.
